St Peter's Church, Northampton
March - May 2024
This concept for a theatre installation explores the possibility of inserting a pop-up into an existing space. In this instance, a deconsecrated church in the heart of Northampton, where the proposed client (Masque Theatre) aims to host events.
Within the detailing of the proposed, the properties and appropriateness of materials and construction methods are considered alongside the positioning of the stage and the accessibility and safety regulations.
In order to make best use of the space, an adaptable stage frame sits in the centre between the columns of the building. This provides a long, narrow stage space allowing movement and, using lighting that is connected to the frame, different scenes can be brought to life.
Around this demountable stage, sits tiered seating pallets. Providing a sustainable approach in a potentially wasteful industry, the custom design of the seating uses wooden pallets and adds height by placing connected wooden slats with a sheet at the top to achieve standard ergonomic requirements. This can go to as many levels as needed depending on the space and audience numbers.
